Trunk Bay, just over a mile east of Hawksnest, has the best facilities on the island, and is perhaps the most gorgeous beach in the Virgin Island chain. Shaded white sand, clear turquoise-blue water, stunning views and a 200-yard labeled snorkeling trail draw crowds of tourists. Try to arrive early in the morning or just before sunset to enjoy the beach at its uncrowded best. The $4-per-person admission fee buys you access to the picnic area, snack bar, equipment-rental stand, showers and shops.

Cinnamon Bay is the longest beach on St. John. Over a half-mile of soft white sand stretches along this north-shore bay and extends into the water.Facilities include a restaurant, snack bar, restrooms, picnic tables and telephones. Lifeguards are on duty during the day, and Cinnamon Bay Watersports Center, 340-776-6330. Beach Shop rents snorkeling equipment, lounge chairs, kayaks, bikes and windsurfing boards. You can also arrange for scuba tours or sailing trips right on the beach. Windsurfing is good here, especially in the afternoon, when the wind picks up. During the winter months, the waves are big enough for surfing and boogie boarding. Tiny Cinnamon Cay is just offshore, a hiking trail starts across the road from the parking lot, and Cinnamon Bay Campground offers overnight facilities.
